In 1992 St. Petersburg, veteran thief Yuri Mikheev ("Baron") and his partner burglarize the luxurious apartment of Mikhail Monakhov, a corrupt banker linked to organized crime. Among the loot, Baron secures Rembrandt's painting Danaë (Aegina), concealing its true identity as an original smuggled out of the Hermitage.
After a tip-off leads to his arrest, Baron finds himself behind bars, where his failing health takes a turn for the worse. Before dying, he makes a confession to crime journalist Andrei Seregin, begging him to find the original painting and safely return it to the Hermitage Museum.
Honoring Baron's final request, Seregin begins an independent investigation into the art theft. As he pieces together the clues, his inquiries draw the dangerous attention of powerful mob boss "Antibiotik," who orders his syndicate to silence anyone threatening to expose the Hermitage swap.
Seregin tracks down Irina, Baron's mistress who holds the hidden masterpiece, but the mob closes in on them both. Realizing the immense scale of corruption reaching high-ranking political figures, the journalist races against time while fighting off deadly attempts on his life.
With mob hitmen and corrupt officials closing every escape route, Seregin makes a desperate final move to expose the syndicate. He sets out to secure the painting and deliver proof of the Hermitage conspiracy to the public before Antibiotik's forces eliminate him for good.
